We have been working on our bedroom for what feels like an eternity but we’ve made some big strides! We painted which was really exciting for me. When I say we I mean my parents, and best friend came in and helped me make short work of the room knocking it out in a days work. Christian continues to amaze me with his ability to teach himself new stills. He cut all of the floors for our herringbone design we picked out, despite a few curious chickens always in his way. He laid all of the flooring and then we worked together to get them sanded, filled, and sealed. I’ll post a more detailed reel with our flooring steps and products used but we have sealed floors and are doing the last few things to move into our room soon.

This week I worked on the walls in the hallway and kitchen. Before we moved in we stripped several layers of wallpaper, some layers had been painted over which made it even more difficult to remove. I had high hopes that we could salvage the walls with some sanding, priming and paint, but I honestly think that I just didn’t was to add more to my list of places that would need mud. We still have to mud and tape the seems of the drywall in the kitchen and I know that won’t be fun 😅
After a coat of primer it was really clear all of the walls will need a skim coat of mud to level everything out. Welcome to home renovations where no project is as straightforward as it initially seems 😂

So excited for this update! It was getting drafty so we had to finish getting drywall up on the ceiling to finally close off the attic. Finishing the drywall finally allowed us to add in lighting and it’s been a game changer. Definitely still has a lot of detailed projects to complete the kitchen but I can truly say I love my kitchen!

Our project pace has slowed way down 😅 as it turns out it is more convenient to not live in two houses but it is a lot more challenging to work on projects and navigate all of your personal belongings already in the space. We’ve been catching up on some of our neglected work too so I’ve been slacking on the updates. But, our latest project is for our tea bar, I’m pretty excited about this one because we were working with a smaller space. I wanted to add some more storage and counter space but I also didn’t want to crowd the kitchen. So you know what that means… custom project! We are still midway through this one but the top is stained, sealed, and attached. It just needs a few trim pieces to finish it out and we can work on the shelves. I’ve got some other big exciting projects coming up this week and can’t wait to share with you all!

I promise to take some better pictures and give you all a cool reveal when we get the sink faucet installed so you can see the counters better but we did butcher block counter tops! We struggled with this decision but after we looked at granite, and quartz options we didn’t love any of them. We loved the look of butcher block but wanted something more durable. So our compromise was to seal the butcher block with poly to make them more durable and to to a granite island to have a food prep space that can hold up to all of the living we do in our kitchen. The combo looks amazing and I think was the sweet spot for us! It’s starting to look like a real kitchen

It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve posted an update, mainly because we have been working on some practical move items like getting the chicken coop moved over and moving over our fence for the dogs. Also I’ve been back to cooking and being a mom just spending some time with Winter and we needed that bad. So here’s a quick little catch up for ya

It’s been a really busy week for us. They all have been busy but this one was stressful and busy 😅 we ran into a lot of complications. Our first complication was during staining, then sealing. So stay tuned for what went wrong and how we navigated those obstacles.

The first picture is what the floors looked like after we removed the carpet. The next photos show what it looked like after sanding with two different grits, then I went to google and decided to try scrubbing them with hydrogen peroxide because that was a recommendation I came across and I already had it at the new house in our limited resources. The first pass did a decent job but not quite enough. So I scrubbed a second time and then a third time just wedding my rag with the peroxide and then scrubbing until the wood was clearly wet with it. I let it dry on its own in between passes and it looks so much better! I think the stain color we chose will take care of the rest and you will never know they were there! Hope this helps anyone struggling with hardwood staining

So I thought Christian was going to sand the floors while I packed up the old house but he decided it would go faster with two people so we have been sanding as fast as we can to knock these floors out! I think we will finish up sanding today and be able to stain tonight. Such a humbling experience to do it yourself!

Quick update while we knock out big big things this weekend. It’s been a really busy few days at the new house. We have been working to stretch our budget the most but also to not skip out on doing things the right way. This usually means more labor but we can do a lot of fun projects with the money we save. We also learn a lot as we go. Get ready for a a ton of videos to catch you all up on this weekend

I can’t wait to be done painting this ceiling. My best advice to someone who is considering painting their ceiling is…. Don’t 😂 it’s seriously the worst. After I took this video I thought I was going home last night but instead we moved everything off the floors to get ready to lay them. I am so ready to have floors!
