WE SAVED THE FISH FRY!!!

I was estimating a job in Waukesha today when I got a call from the new owner of Sit - N - Bull bar and restaurant in Powers Lake Wisconsin. It was 1:00pm when he called and he told me their fryer won’t light and they have a fish fry at 4:00pm. I finished estimating and personally drove an hour south, arrived, found that the thermocouple was bad, found a local supplier, drove an hour to pick up the part, got back to Sit - N - Bull by 3:45 and had the fryer up and running by 3:55! This was a nice little job to finish the week, and everyone gets their delicious fish fry. So if you’re in the area stop in at Sit - N - Bull bar and restaurant. They are under new management and have some of the best fish fry around!

Sometimes the job isn’t installing a system.

Sometimes the job is figuring out how the system is even going to exist in the space you’re given.

That was the situation on this project.

When our team at VP Specialty Welding & Mechanical arrived, the mechanical room was basically a blank slate; a few supply and return stubs and not much else. From there, we had to design and build the entire system around the constraints of the space.

The finished setup includes two automatic zone dampers, an ERV, three thermostats, a whole-house humidifier, a 102,000 BTU furnace, and a 5-ton A/C system.

The biggest challenge was height. A traditional vertical install simply wasn’t possible. The home originally had a boiler system from the 1920s, and the old 2½" steel boiler headers were still running throughout the ceiling area, which significantly reduced our available headroom.

So the team fabricated a custom stand to run the furnace and A/C horizontally, then designed and fabricated the entire duct system around it; including two fully custom plenums.

A big shoutout to our HVAC Operations Manager, Nick O’Day, who led this project. Nick designed the plenums and handled the detailed wiring between the equipment, zone dampers, and control modules that make the entire system operate together.

This is the kind of work that separates real craftsmanship from cookie-cutter installs.

Not every project gives you perfect conditions. Sometimes you have to design the solution before you can even start installing it.
