We're not going to lie. Choosing the right color of stain for your log home can be a challenge. There are so many options and so many different types of stains. You have to worry about compatibility with old products, pricing, and how will it look on my log home?

Our best advice when it comes to stains is to try before you buy. Order samples. Test them out on a spot with clean and sound wood (wood that hasn't rotted or mimics the condition of your ready to stain log cabin.) Let it dry. Do you like the color? Is it the color you expected? If so, then you're ready to stain.

If you need samples or help picking a stain or matching the color of an old stain, give us a call at (303) 284-4373 or visit us online at summitpainandstain.com

How often should I re-stain my log home? Most manufactuers suggest every 3–5 years. A quick maintenance coat of Cascade® or Transformation Stain® keeps your logs protected and looking great. And a few small touch-ups now save big money on repairs later.

Do I have to prep inside my cabin too when applying Symphony?

Just because it’s inside doesn’t mean you can skip prep! Here are a couple rules of thumb according to Sashco:

✨NEW WOOD: If you’ve decided to keep your logs natural looking and only want to apply Symphony to bare wood, you'll get the best results if you sand the wood to a smooth finish with fine sandpaper. Be careful to remove ALL dust before finishing. Do NOT use steel wool; it may cause rust stains. For a smoother finish, sand between coats.

🌲FINISHED WOOD: Compatibility is a HUGE issue, so logs that already have some type of stain or sealer on them will need to be tested for compatibility; CALL Sashco so they can talk you through the testing procedure. For best adhesion coatings not made by Sashco, it's usually best to lightly sand the surface before applying Symphony. Old finishes may need to be mechanically removed if a lighter appearance is desired. The smoother the prep, the smoother the shine.

One question we get a lot of is I have an existing log home can I put an oil based stain over a water based stain? The short answer is no. The long answer is it's complicated. You'll get the best results if you start from a good clean wood surface to start from. Oil and water don't mix. If you put an oil based and water based stain together you may get unexpected results that cost you more in the end. Your best bet is to check with the manufactuer. If this is something you're running into give us a call at (303) 284-4373 we'll be happy to talk shop.

Why do log home stains fail? If you've noticed peeling, cracking, or fading on your log cabin, one or a few of these may be the culprit.

❌ No back-brushing when the stain was applied.
❌ Wet wood or poor prep.
❌ Old non-drying oils under new stain.
❌ Applying stain in excessive heat or too cold of temps.

Properly prep your logs from the get go. This means getting down good sound clean wood.

Blast or pressure washing old stain off. Then, sand it down down your logs to remove any fuzzing or what the log folks call "felting".

Next, make sure you're applying stain properly. Follow the manufacturers specifications and have plenty on hand. You'll need to use more stain than you think and really saturate logs.

Remember to back brush to make sure it gets into all the nooks and crannies for maximum protection from moisture that can cause rot.

And finally, inspect your log home every fall and spring too! We're here to help, if you have any questions give us a call at (970) 688-0211 or visit summitpaintandstain.com
