California water systems have a new hexavalent chromium standard to meet. The question is whether your lab partner is ready when you are.
Effective October 1, 2024, California established a maximum contaminant level of 10 µg/L for hexavalent chromium in drinking water. The State Water Board set this standard with one priority: public health. Long-term ingestion of hexavalent chromium carries documented cancer risk, and California's new limit reflects how seriously the state is taking that.
The compliance clock is already running.
Large public water systems serving 10,000 or more connections must begin compliance monitoring by October 1, 2026. Medium-sized systems (1,000 to 9,999 connections) follow by October 1, 2027. Smaller systems have later deadlines, but early planning protects everyone from capacity bottlenecks as demand increases statewide.
To meet that demand, BSK Associates has doubled our laboratory capacity for hexavalent chromium testing using EPA Method 218.7. Compliance does not have to be complicated. It does require starting early.
