The Crowley Company

The Crowley Company Leader in digitization, offering scanning services, leading hardware and support services.

A world leader in a very niche industry, The Crowley Company partners with archivists, librarians, records managers and many others to ensure that yesterday's treasures (ie: Presidential papers, membership records, photo collections, original publications, etc.) and every day necessities (corporate and medical records, deeds, county records, etc.) are digitally or micrographically preserved for optimal storage, private or public access and long-term preservation.

As the volume of digitization increased, the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art needed a workflow that could support both productivity and access.

By combining in-house digitization with contracted conversion services, the organization was able to expand its efforts and help make more than 1.5 million digital images available online.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful workflow planning can help institutions:
• Scale digitization programs
• Improve efficiency
• Maintain quality standards
• Increase access to important historical collections

Preservation in practice is about creating sustainable workflows that support long-term access to cultural heritage materials.

When customers place an order, they're often excited to get started—and eager to know what comes next.

That's where Patti comes in.

Over her 12 years with The Crowley Company, Patti has worked in several roles supporting customers and digitization projects. Today, she serves as one of the first points of contact after a purchase, helping customers understand the process from order submission to delivery.

Whether she's answering questions, coordinating details behind the scenes, or connecting customers with the right team members, her goal is to make the experience as easy and reassuring as possible.

"My goal is to make the experience as smooth and reassuring as possible, so they feel confident in their purchase."

By helping customers understand what to expect and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks, Patti plays an important role in creating a positive experience long before a scanner is delivered.

Because great customer service starts with a conversation.

Rescanning and rework can quickly slow down even well-planned digitization projects.

One of the best ways to reduce repeated work is to build quality and consistency into the workflow from the start.

Consider:
• Establishing preparation standards
• Using consistent capture settings
• Performing regular quality checks
• Following clear file naming conventions
• Documenting workflow procedures

These practices help teams catch issues earlier, improve project timelines, and maintain reliable output quality throughout a project.

The difference between a good scan and a great one often comes down to preparation.

Simple steps like removing debris, flattening pages, organizing materials, and checking alignment can improve:
• Readability
• OCR performance
• Output consistency
• Long-term usability

Preparation may happen behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in creating high-quality digital collections and supporting long-term preservation goals.

Preservation-focused workflows can make a lasting difference for institutions managing historical collections.

Oklahoma Historical Society emphasized the importance of creating high-quality scans designed for long-term usability while improving digital access for patrons and researchers.

“As the stewards of our state’s history, we must always consider preservation.”

Thoughtful digitization workflows help institutions balance preservation, access, and operational efficiency across large-scale projects.
