In the spring, keepers need to feed their bees until the flowers start to bloom. There is a plastic 2 gallon feeder in the brood box that is filled with a syrup that keeps them going. These little over-achieving ladies have filled it with something much better than syrup! This is a queen in her cage. When we buy a package of bees, the queen is shipped in a cage with a cork plug. The plug gets removed and replaced with a marshmallow. The others bees will eat the marshmallow, freeing the queen so she can lay eggs. The marshmallow acts as a time delay to allow the workers time to acclimate to their new queen. Notice the white dot? More on that later!
