SpaceX’s new spectrum acquisition announcement on Thursday shook up the US telecom industry. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon saw their stocks fall, while investors rushed to buy shares of telecom tower companies, expecting Starlink Mobile to expand its network.

T-Mobile is now pushing back, with its CTO arguing that SpaceX has acquired only a small portion of the available 800 MHz radio spectrum, meaning the deal is unlikely to significantly change the competitive landscape.

SpaceX said Thursday it agreed to buy a nationwide block of 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management, up to 14 megahertz of paired airwaves.

The Wall Street Journal put the price at $8 billion in cash. SpaceX said the low-band spectrum fills a gap for Starlink Mobile, because 800 MHz travels farther and gets through walls better than the higher frequencies Starlink already uses.

After hours Thursday, AT&T fell 6.51% to $23.25, Verizon fell 5.85% to $43.64, and T-Mobile fell 6.63% to $159.95. Friday’s session got worse. Verizon was down about 10%, on pace for its worst day since 2002.

T-Mobile dropped about 13%. AT&T about 10%. SpaceX was up around 1% to 2%. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said more competition in spectrum is good news for consumers.

The deal still needs FCC approval.

The Town of Fountain Hills, Arizona Town Council approved ordinances regulating 5G small wireless facilities and antennas during its Oct. 6 meeting, closing its five-year process.

It was adopted by 5-2 vote with amendments.
