Ottenweller recently recognized one of our machinists, Vaughn, with a plaque to celebrate his Diamond Continuous Improvement Idea.

By changing the setup and machining path for one of our parts, Vaughn reduced the machining time from 7.5 minutes per part to just 2.6 minutes per part, resulting in a 188% increase in productivity.

Our Continuous Improvement program encourages every employee at Ottenweller to submit ideas that improve safety, quality, productivity, cost savings, or environmental impact. Because our operators work with our processes every day, they're often our best source of improvement ideas. Each idea is reviewed for feasibility, need, and value, and many have been successfully implemented. Receiving a Diamond Idea award recognizes ideas that deliver the greatest impact.

Exciting changes are underway at Ottenweller!

Over the past several months, we've launched OCI University, a structured training program that's already helping new welders build confidence and develop the skills they need for success at Ottenweller.

As part of this investment in our people, we're continuing to enhance the program with:

• Dedicated one-on-one instruction from our Training Specialist
• Hands-on welding experience in a structured learning environment
• Newly renovated weld training cells designed to support learning and skill development

At Ottenweller, safety and quality are the foundation of everything we do. OCI University is another investment in our people, and we're looking forward to sharing more as the program continues to grow.

After 41 years at Ottenweller, machinist Rusty Reed is ending his career with us, but he has no plans of slowing down in retirement.

When Rusty started at the company, our machines weren't programmable. He was here for the arrival of our first CNC machines, which had to be coded one letter at a time. Over the years, Rusty's passion for learning and commitment to innovation helped bring Mastercam technology into our company, which paved the way for the advanced 3D modeling programs we use today.

Rusty worked hard at Ottenweller, and when he clocked out each day, he pursued his other full-time passion: alligator snapping turtle research and conservation.

Over the last 40 years, Rusty has become a global leader in alligator snapping turtle research and founded his nonprofit, Blackwater Turtle Refuge. Through extensive studies, field work, and meticulous documentation, he has helped establish restocking initiatives in both Louisiana and Arkansas to rebuild the vulnerable populations of the largest freshwater turtle in the world.

Retirement will give Rusty the time to dedicate himself even more to this education and conservation. As he told our employees at his sendoff this morning: "Go out and do what you love. Go out and love what you do. Learn to master something...Every moment is an adventure!"

After 28 years with Ottenweller, our accounting assistant, Dawn, is beginning her well-deserved retirement. Throughout her time with us, she has exemplified a good work ethic and unwavering attention to detail.

If you've ever visited or called our Fort Wayne plant, chances are you were greeted by Dawn. Her contributions here have made a lasting impact on this company, our team, and our customers.

Meet our Large Machining Centers!

Our large CNC machining centers are built to handle oversized and heavy components up to 20,000 pounds, delivering the strength and stability needed for complex machining operations. Using advanced tooling and computer-controlled accuracy, these machines mill, drill, and contour large-scale parts while maintaining tight tolerances. Many of our larger fabrications move through machining both before and after welding to ensure proper fit, alignment, and final dimensional accuracy.

Fun fact: Even on parts up to 12 feet long, machining centers can hold tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch!

While the equipment is impressive, it’s our experienced machinists who make it all possible. Their expertise in programming, setup, and quality control ensures each part meets exact specifications while maximizing efficiency and performance.
