We have been getting several requests to verify STC Franklin 180HP/220HP conversions were installed legally on Stinson & Cessna's advertised for sale. The FAA requires the aircraft owner to obtain written permission from the STC Holder to alter the aircraft using the STC. Altering an aircraft without permission to use our STC may result in safety, legal, financial, and insurance ramifications. Unfortunately, we now know of several individuals that have used our STC's without our permission, adding significant value to their aircraft without compensating us for using our STC.

Or worse. One of the many time-consuming nags that tag along with major and even minor maintenance is preparing the supporting regulatory paperwork. It’s one issue that sends some of us flocking to the experimental world and it’s easy to see why. For the maintenance troops, filling out paperwork...

Pre-Purchase Inspection: "An often-overlooked step of the pre-buy is investigating which STC’s are legally installed on the aircraft." "Legally Installed" starts with receiving "Written Permission" from the STC owner to use the STC! It is not an option or a suggestion... The FAA requires Written Permission per 14 CFR § 91.403 (d) --- “A person must not alter an aircraft based on a Supplemental Type Certificate unless the owner or operator of the aircraft has written permission from the STC holder.” Also, you cannot just use an old STC just because you cannot find the STC owner. An old STC does not end up in the "Public Domain" for anyone to pirate. All the Franklin Engine Company (Syracuse, New York) STC conversions performed since 1976 are illegal. Insurance companies are getting wise to the use of "Pirated" STC's. See this video for your options and contact us if you need assistance making your aircraft Legal.

A pre-buy inspection on an aircraft is your chance to research and investigate every aspect of your potential investment. The prebuy should include a thoroug...

Franklin Aircraft Engines of Ft. Collins, Colorado currently has an STC engine conversion kit and a used 6A-350 220hp engine available. The STC conversion kit is for the Cessna 172 / 175 and includes the parts pictured along with STC paperwork and installation instructions. The used 220hp engine has a yellow tagged crankshaft and log books.

Great opportunity to upgrade to a Franklin 6 cylinder engine that will produce 220hp along with a constant speed propeller. Outstanding performance you will not see with any other engine conversion.

Here’s an interesting historical stamp on a Franklin 220hp cylinder we have at the shop. Years ago, the Jacobs and Franklin engine companies were part of the Allied Aero Industries group. Quite possibly both sister companies work together with parts manufacturing.

When it comes to routine aircraft maintenance, one of the most overlooked item is inspecting the engine mount.

Below is a link to an article in which the airplane owner "recently discovered a cracked tube, and when I scrubbed it with a wire brush, I found a gaping hole —the tube had rusted through from the inside."

Few other takeaways from the article:

"...the most common problem they see on Cessna welded steel mounts is corrosion on Cessna 180 and 182 mounts due to the proximity to the left and right exhaust manifolds."

"...was adamant about is avoiding the use of plastic tie-wraps (i.e., zip ties) to secure anything to a welded steel mount"

The 4 cylinder Franklin 4A-235-B31 engine is FAA type certificated. Although no U.S. production aircraft had this engine option, we liked the engine so much we provided installation kit solutions for various experimental aircraft. Here’s an image of our engine package we designed for the Kitfox.
