Septic tank usage varies by household. Occupancy is the chief factor, clearly solids retention will increase with use, and over time. With almost 30 years in this business I can say failure to pump when the floating solids are over 8” deep is high on list, salt from water softener, maple trees over tank or d-box, use of ridex or other product which disperse solids out of tank, and finally poor design or siting and damage through excavation or vehicle traffic.
