One of the most important roles of civil engineers is our ability to affect and serve communities on a large scale. In fact, we can even help keep a community alive. Oftentimes this can be in humble, simple ways. I experienced this firsthand through the design process for the Deming Park Pool (Terre Haute Parks & Recreation) Renovations project with RATIO Architects. Originally built in the 1960s, this local park pool served generations of families within the Terre Haute community. For over 60 summers, kids gathered at this small pool and made lasting memories.
When CE Solutions came onto the scene, we were responsible for inspecting the existing pool house structure and designing key improvements needed to keep the building standing for another 60 years. The conditions of the structure had seen better days, requiring multiple column and roof repairs, along with an expansion for updated amenities, such as a handicapped accessible bathroom for children with disabilities in the local area.
This project is a strong reminder that what we do every day at CE Solutions makes a difference for our communities. Even those within the community can remind you themselves. Last fall, I was vacationing with my family in Colorado, and I happened to come across another man from Indiana at a football game. Through small conversation I learned that he was originally from Terre Haute and he went to Deming Park pool for years with his childhood friends! I explained to him what we were doing with this project, and his face immediately lit up. At the end of the conversation, he patted me on the back said, “thank you for all that you are doing for my childhood park.”
Structures have meaning. CE Solutions strives to extend the lives of structures to meaningfully impact the lives of a community.
