Shrinkage is guaranteed. Defects aren't.
Every metal casting contracts as it cools, in three stages: liquid, solidification, and solid shrinkage. The solidification stage is where trouble starts, leaving surface cavities or, worse, hidden internal porosity that can weaken a part under load.
