As we get into late fall and early winter, here are a few things to keep in mind.

✔️ In Northern states, store grain at 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. In the South, store it below 40 degrees.
✔️ Take more than one temperature sample at different spots in the bin.
✔️ Don’t operate your aeration fan during rain, fog, or snow. This could draw more moisture into the bin.

How cool did you keep your grain this past summer?

How often have you been checking your grain?

The traditional recommendation is to check it at least once a week during the warmer months.

Don’t enter the bin, but climb to the top and see if there is a crust or noticeable smell. Also check for surface moisture, as this is a typical first sign of a storage problem.

Finally, start your aeration fans immediately if you notice something is wrong.

During the first few weeks that your grain is in the bin, make sure it isn’t wet, slimy, sticking, or frozen together.

If you see this issue arise, that means your grain is experiencing early moisture migration. To address this problem, run your aeration fans to cool the grain until the exhaust temperature is equal to your desired grain temperature.
