To facilitate the development of Alaska’s mariculture industry Governor Dunleavy worked with Alaska Legislature to appropriate $5 million to help realize the vision of what mariculture can mean to the people of Alaska. The objective of this project is for AMA to establish a grant process to distribute funding to mariculture businesses throughout Alaska.

The purpose of the MIGP is to provide dollar for dollar matching grant funds to mariculture farmers, processors, nurseries, and hatchery operations who are engaged in developing or expanding mariculture in Alaska. The MIGP is intended to promote a viable and sustainable mariculture industry producing shellfish and aquatic plants for the long term benefit of Alaska’s economy, environment, and communities.

Could a farmer- and rancher-owned cooperative help strengthen Alaska’s agriculture industry? A co-op could help producers tackle shared challenges like high input costs, marketing, labor, processing, and transportation. But whether it moves forward depends on you.

The State of Alaska, through the Governor’s Office and Division of Agriculture, wants your input. If enough interest is shown, the Governor’s Office will support a feasibility study by the University of Alaska Fairbanks with up to $50,000 to explore next steps.
