Podium finish at the Parker 425. Third place is never our goal, but can't complain. Race started out rough. We expected to start at daybreak, drove 30 minutes in the dark. Lights were misdirected so badly that I couldn't see. Managed keep pace but we were dead last by the time we could see, and few cars from slower classes had passed us. It's a long race though.
When daylight struck we started reeling in the leaders. 45 miles into the race we're in second gaining fast. Stopped at pit 2 to top off fuel at Baja pits. Technical issues slow us down, spent way too long in pit 2, but exited the pit in 3rd place. The race is young.
We got up to speed and realized the right side hood latch...wasn't. Boom! Other latch couldn't hold on without his buddy, hood flies open, slams the cockpit, we are driving 65 on a desert course completely blind. (I don't recommend) Kept it straight, slowed down, mowed over some unknown cacti. No serious damage. Used tow strap to tie down the hood. Rolling again.
Making up miles, we're 10 minutes out of the lead. We close to 2 minutes, and we are running in second place now. Truck feels great, running strong.
About mile marker 70 the front pinion fractures. Feel a terrible vibration, pull over to evaluate. Flat? No. We roll out again. Suddenly, we lose propulsion entirely, and coast off the course to evaluate. The front drive line spinning loose smashed the shift mechanism. Jon was able to fix it enough to get us in gear again...and we're off. No front drive line, so no more four wheel drive, no problem.
But, we lost all the miles we had gained. We closed the gap to two minutes again, but again the hood had worked loose. Stop, fix again. Roll. Close the gap again.
20 miles out of main pit, and we're less than a mile from the lead.
We lose fuel pressure. Hammer gets 2 miles per gallon, and we are about 85 miles from our last fuel up. We think might be out of fuel, but at half throttle, the truck keeps rolling. Make it back to main on fumes (we think), but after fueling the pressure doesn't come up again. Clogged fuel filters. Clean them in the pit, get rolling again.
Within 2 miles the fuel pressure is already tanking. Not good. Turns out the baffle material in our fuel cell was breaking down. The jostling stirred it up, and was plugging the fuel filters almost as fast as we could clean them.
Limped along, at 1/4 throttle. Hard to believe we were cooking along at 103...now we can't hit 30mph! We lost 2nd place position just outside of pit 1, 170 miles into the race. Felt as helpless as a hipster with a flat tire.
Overall a great weekend, just no win. A special thank you to Jon Tuben, Jesse Clark, Mike Curtright, and T&J Performance!
