Mother Nature often knows best. Take the kingfisher's beak, for example.

In the 1990s, Japan's bullet trains had a problem: every time one exited a tunnel, built-up air pressure released with a loud boom that could be heard by nearby residents. Engineers turned to nature for a solution and modeled the train's nose after the kingfisher's beak, which lets the bird dive into water with barely a splash. The result? A quieter train that ran 10% faster and used 15% less energy.
