Foreman. C.E. Buck of the New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad Co. is shown here setting up a Shield-Arc welder to repair a railroad viaduct built in 1901. The machine is being set up specifically for overhead and vertical work to minimize spatter and ensure maximum welding speed and quality. More than five miles of welded bead were laid, all in an overhead or vertical welding position to complete the repairs.
