Flare cuts can be a beautiful way to cover a large area quickly. This technique often utilizes significant negative space, enhancing the contrast and drama of the flare cuts' reflections. It requires a skilled touch, and students in Diane Scalese's Flare Cut Fi****ms Engraving course had the opportunity to learn from one of the best! Thank you, Diane, for sharing your immense skill and knowledge in this incredible class!

Diane Scalese shows us how to create a gently rounded heel on a flat graver, which is perfect for flare cut engraving! In this video, Diane is using a #42 flat in this video, but the technique can be applied to other sizes of flat gravers to make working in smaller or larger designs easier.

Other notes:
• You can use a ceramic lap instead of the cast iron lap with diamond spray
• These gravers are also great for sculpting techniques!

Thanks Diane!

Basic classes offer an incredible opportunity to not only learn new skills in person but also to unleash your creativity and grow as an artist. This week, progress made by students in Basic Metal Engraving and Basic Stone Setting was showcased through their engaging experimentation on practice plates. We witnessed an incredible array of inlay styles, painterly line engravings, and expressive cuts that beautifully highlighted set stones. A huge thanks to Lee Griffiths and Kevin Biehn for their expert guidance and support. Additionally, a big shoutout to Kevin for celebrating his birthday this week—everyone enjoyed that ice cream cake!

Lee Griffiths () continues the discussion from his previous tip, explaining how to draw lost-edge scrolls so that they merge smoothly where they break the boundary of a border.

Check out these stunning engraved band sets by Kevin Biehn! The way the facets reflect light creates a beautiful, dynamic quality as the repeating geometric pattern elegantly wraps around each ring. These designs truly highlight the artistry and craftsmanship involved.

We are excited to welcome Kevin to Emporia as he guides students in developing their own artistry and craftsmanship through the Stone Setting Focus Program. We’re glad to have you here, Kevin!

Creating your own designs for engraving is essential for elevating your work to the next level.

Lee Griffiths developed the Ornamental Layout & Design class specifically to help students master various scroll styles. The course primarily focuses on integrating ornamental elements into different design projects. We had the chance to speak with Jillian Konopa about her experience in the class and her appreciation for the collaborative and dynamic atmosphere, where all students were actively engaged with each other's work.

Thank you, Lee, for creating this excellent course, and thank you to Jillian for sharing your insight!
