We’re excited to debut our newest freight car restoration! Pennsylvania Railroad No. 258288 was originally built in October 1958 as a covered hopper, later acquired by Conrail in August 1976 and modified to ballast service.

We want to give a big thanks to all who had a hand in this project including painter Billy Cassell, artist Eric Werner, and Big E Production’s Eric Schlentner for artwork and design layout!

We are also very appreciative of the help from The Conrail Historical Society and Brock Kerchner who tracked down the original Pennsylvania Railroad car number.

The hopper has now been moved outside and is joined by the recreated Western Maryland hopper and General American Pfaudler milk car that were both painted over the winter months.

The next freight car we have chosen to receive a restoration is one of the more unique we own. This 6,000 gallon bulk milk car was built by General American Transportation Co in 1947 as General American-Pfaudler GPEX 1048. After its milk hauling career ended it was sold to the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) for work train service.

Once complete, the car will be used occasionally as a water source for our locomotives and in photo charter service.

Painter Billy Cassell has given the car a nice fresh coat of Pullman Green!

Our most recent freight car to be painted has departed the restoration shop! Built for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, this hopper car now sports a Western Maryland scheme. We had no original Western Maryland coal hoppers on the property, so the decision was made to use this car to help represent the railroad.

A special thanks to Eric Schlentner (Big E Productions) for providing lettering diagrams, painter Billy Cassell and artist Eric Werner for their hard work on the car.

This restoration is dedicated to the memory of Jamie Starkey, a fan who passed away last year. We are honored to display his name on the side of the car.

ELKINS, WV - Durbin & Greenbrier Valley RR (DGVR) has awarded a contract to Sistersville, West Virginia-based Sistersville Tank Works to build a new, welded boiler for Buffalo Creek & Gauley steam locomotive No. 4.

The family-owned, custom-vessel fabrication company, has been in operation for over 120 years. Sistersville previously built the current boiler for Cass Scenic Railroad Heisler No. 6, which has given the railroad excellent service for nearly two decades since it debuted in 2004!

“We are proud to partner with a West Virginia owned company to help us return this legendary steam locomotive to operation,” said DGVR Pres. John Smith. “The team from Sistersville will be working closely with our Cass crew and the FRA throughout the build process to ensure the best quality possible.”

Once restoration is complete, the No. 4 will operate on the restored, 15-mile, Cass to Durbin line, departing from the Cass Scenic Railroad depot.

The new boiler will cost $675,000. To date, over $135,000 has been raised for the project. For those interested in helping fund the boiler, donations can be made on our steamthe4.com website!

Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad No. 4 is a 2-8-0 steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1926 for the National Railway of Mexico, but never delivered. Originally intended to burn oil, it was converted to burn coal and eventually sold to the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad in West Virginia.
During its life on the BC&G it was used to haul coal and passenger trains for the Dundon, WV based short line.

On February 27th, 1965, the No. 4 hauled the very last revenue train for the railroad. It was soon sold to the Quakertown and Eastern in 1972, a tourist line located in Quakertown, PA. Following a short-lived career in the Keystone State, the locomotive was purchased by Southwest Virginia Scenic Railroad of Hiltons, VA where it remained until 1978 when it was purchased by the North Carolina Transportation Museum. There, it operated until 2001, when much needed repairs forced the museum to take it out of service. The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad purchased the beloved BC&G No. 4 in the Spring of 2015.

We hope our post regarding Western Maryland Shay 6 earlier today did not cause too much alarm… our shop crew wanted to have a little fun during their lunch break.

We are happy to report that the locomotive is going back together, along with her recognizable straight stack! This week we have been busy wrapping the boiler with insulation.

We look forward to returning this iconic locomotive to the rails this season.

More updates to come!

Work begins next week to raise the height of the shop door so the locomotive can leave this spring. 😃

We hope everyone had a great Christmas! Santa left a freshly painted 70-ton hopper under our tree!

Due to increased demand, the North Pole Railway (NPRX) has been upgrading to larger capacity coal hoppers according to our sources.
