Proud to share big news from the UTEP Aerospace Center 🚀 UTEP College of Engineering

Today, The University of Texas at El Paso announced a $2 million federal appropriation to expand drone testing and operations infrastructure in Fabens and Tornillo. Under the leadership of Aerospace Center Executive Director Dr. Shery Welsh, this investment strengthens UTEP’s unmanned aerial systems capabilities and builds on the recent FAA Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) waiver — positioning our region at the forefront of advanced drone research and real-world operations.

Thank you to Congressman Tony Gonzales for his partnership and support in advancing innovation, national security, and workforce development in our region. This milestone expands opportunity for our students, faculty, and community while accelerating the impact of aerospace research at UTEP.

🎉 A Historic Achievement for the UTEP Aerospace Center! 🚀

We are proud to celebrate Md Ariful Ahsan, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Research (Regents’ Research Excellence Program), for his outstanding contribution to a landmark perspective article publication in the “Energy & Environmental Science” journal, one of the world’s top energy journals with an Impact Factor of 31 and ranked #3 globally in the field of Energy.

📘 The paper, titled “An Atomistic View of the Dynamic Behaviour of Single Atom/Nanocluster Electrocatalytic Active Sites,” provides groundbreaking insights into how atomic-scale dynamics govern electrocatalytic performance. By combining in situ microscopy (TEM, XAS) with molecular dynamics and machine learning, the study reveals how single-atom and nanocluster catalysts evolve under real operating conditions to enhance CO₂ reduction and nitrogen fixation processes.

This publication represents the highest-impact paper in the history of the UTEP Aerospace Center, showcasing the Center’s growing leadership in AI-driven materials science, clean energy, and advanced electrocatalysis research.

👏 Congratulations to Dr. Ahsan and his collaborators from Palm Beach Atlantic University, Florida International University, The University of Texas at Austin, Yunnan University, Hampton University, and Nanyang Technological University Singapore for this remarkable achievement that reflects UTEP’s excellence in research and innovation.
