Every once in a while something completely new, different, & unexpected happens.
Today during a site meeting with an inspector, the INSPECTOR said {unprompted) that "even though the existing beam is low enough that it should be raised" he would not make us do it.
Now here's the TOTALLY NEW part
(again the inspector) "because it would be UNREASONABLY EXPENSIVE for the small difference it would make to the project"!!!
NEVER (& I don't say never often or lightly) have I heard a building official give an owner/project a break (even a small one) because of cost.

Could be an interesting tool to use for siting new buildings.
Even looks fairly "low tech".
OK, "simple" to make with hi tech premade pieces. Looks like a Kinect to read what the kids have done to the sand, a CPU/program(s) to interpret, and a projector to add the colors and contours.

The camera never moves, the interval never changes, there's no crazy 'flow-motion' skills involved and what is captured isn't a picturesque landscape... an

If you are looking for a way to support those working to help the community of Oso, WA after the mudslide please consider SCVSAR. We know one of the handler and dog teams involved, the search is very important but also very difficult on all involved.

While Universal Design and Aging in Place are becoming a bigger part of design this is a device that will allow a lot of mobility within existing home, office, stores, or other hard level areas.
So much of design becomes choices of how to meet needs and desires so having more options is great.
As expensive as this is it could be much less than modifications to make a structure truly accessible to a wheelchair.
I look forward to future developments, hopefully the ability to navigate slopes and uneven surfaces, and lower cost.

The TEK Robotic Mobilization Device is a machine developed to replace the wheelchair. In this demonstration video, we see a man with a severe injury to his spinal cord able to move about in ways that a wheelchair would make very difficult.

I remember these!
The tools we use may change but the root skills required do not.
Pushing a pencil, or a mouse, it is the design skill, material knowledge, and ability to manage projects that creates long term benefit.
