On March 4, 2024, the FCC issued a Public Notice regarding the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). Due to the lack of additional funding from Congress, April 2024 will mark the last full month of benefits under the ACP. Since December 31, 2021, the ACP has been supporting qualifying households with discounts of up to $30 per month towards broadband Internet access and up to $100 for the purchase of a laptop, desktop, or tablet. The monthly Internet benefit increased to $75 per month for households on Tribal lands.

Initially funded with $14.2 billion, the ACP has been a lifeline for over 23 million households. However, without additional funding, the program will exhaust its resources by May 2024. Eligible households will receive their full benefit in April and a pro-rated benefit in May. Enrollment in the ACP has been frozen since February 8.

This program has been instrumental in bridging the digital divide, especially for students in need of reliable Internet access for remote learning. Learn more: https://ow.ly/jgCk50QRhA5

Cybersecurity Pilot Program Proposed by FCC

Today, July 12, 2023, Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel proposed a three-year, $200 million pilot program to support cybersecurity for K-12 schools and public libraries.

If adopted, the proposal would open a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to seek comment on how a pilot program should be structured “to support cybersecurity and advanced firewall-related services for eligible K-12 schools and libraries.”

Cybersecurity and the Future of E-rate
Should network security qualify for E-rate support? In a recent Public Notice, the Federal Communications Commission asked E-rate stakeholders to share their ideas and suggestions as they consider changes to the program’s eligibility rules. Among other questions, the Federal Communications Commission asks:

1. how “advanced or next-generation firewalls” should be defined,
2. what types of equipment, services, and functions should be eligible,
3. whether firewalls should be funded as Category One or Category Two services,
4. and how to ensure applicants make cost-effective purchases.

Join Funds For Learning, LLC and special guest Reg Leichty of Foresight Law + Policy on January 31 at 11:00 Eastern for a live panel discussion about E-rate’s potential role in supporting cybersecurity for the nation’s K-12 schools and public libraries.
