ABR testing goes further by checking how sound signals travel from the ear to the brainstem. Electrodes placed on the head record the brain’s response to sound stimuli.

School screening programs are very important to detect hearing loss in children & adolescents as early as possible and to initiate appropriate treatment measures. 💡

But to look at the issue from a different perspective: What is the best way for teachers to help students with hearing difficulties? 🤔

We give five 🖐️ proven tips:

👩‍🏫 Ensure an appropriate listening environment: Ensure that the classroom is suitable for students with hearing impairments. This means minimizing background noise and standing in a position where your lips are visible to the student.

👀 Use visual aids: Use visual aids such as pictures, graphics, and videos to support your teaching. This not only helps students with hearing impairments, but all students who prefer visual learning methods.

🔁 Repeat important information: Repeat important information so that students with hearing impairments do not miss out. This also helps all students to better retain information.

❓ Ensure the student understands you: Regularly check whether the student understands what you are saying. Give them the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback if they have misunderstood something.

🦻 Respect the student & their needs: Treat the student with hearing impairments with respect & understanding for their needs. Consider their individual needs & work closely with them and their parents to ensure they receive the best possible education.

What kinds of hearing tests can you do with MAICO devices and what do they measure? 💭

👉 ABR: Measures the neural activity of a large portion of the auditory nerve pathway to identify hearing problems which can be related to inner ear or subcortical auditory structures. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) test is common for testing newborn’s hearing and is usually performed as a follow-up test of an OAE test.

👉 OAE: Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) test confirms hearing function up to the cochlea. So, this kind of test is used for testing the health of the inner ear and for detecting conductive hearing loss. For OAE testing no interaction from the patient is needed. That’s why OAE is like ABR a test method that can be performed for testing newborns.

👉 Speech Recognition Threshold: A famous test method for screening children, which not only tests hearing but also understanding and implementing. So, the child must show the word that has been said. The task level of difficulty is increased gradually by reducing the volume. Thanks to that the speech recognition threshold is measured.

👉Audiometry: It measures the hearing threshold of the patient to identify and quantify the degree of hearing loss. Audiometry is a subjective hearing test where response from the patient is needed. Tones of different frequencies are presented, and the patient has to signal when hearing the sound by pushing the response switch or raising the hand.

👉Tympanometry: Evaluates the function of the interaural muscles and the Eustachian Tube Function. Tympanometry is used to differentiate between different pathology types of the middle ear. There is no response from the patient needed.

What is Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)? 🤔

👂 PTA is the most common hearing test to evaluate hearing at several set frequencies. A tone is presented to one or both ears of the patient.

🔊 The sound stimulus’ intensity at various frequencies is changed by the tester. The response of the patient when hearing the sound is recorded.

📈 Thanks to PTA the patient’s hearing threshold can be measured and the test results give in form of an audiogram information to determine if a referral is required for a further treatment.

Do you know the difference between air conduction (AC) and bone conduction (BC)? 🤓

As the name says, the sound can get over two different ways in the inner ear.

On the one hand, the sound is transmitted via air. That’s the air conduction. Across the outer and middle ear the tone is reaching the inner ear. It’s passing the ear canal and ear drum and is transmitted from the middle ear to the inner ear via the ossicles. This kind of conduction marks the hearing sensation. 💨👂

On the other hand, the sound gets through the cranial bone to the inner ear – bone conduction. So the sound is not crossing the outer and middle ear. For hearing sensation this kind of conduction is less important. 🦴👂

But with testing BC, damages in middle or outer ear can be recognized. If the patient has positive test results in BC testing but negative results in AC, one can conclude that the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear is responsible for hearing loss. That’s because those hearing organs are not included in bone conduction testing. 🎧

Finally, a comparison of both conductions can establish the share of sound deafness or sound sensitivity deafness.

“I have really enjoyed using the MAICO easyTone as both a screener and gathering thresholds with students. Thresholds with the new integrated student list or “task list” is the newest component of the easyTone. As I was using this device on location at a school, I was challenged by time limitations in an enormous facility. On a few specific occasions, I chose to use the device in a more unconventional manner by capitalizing on . . . it’s lightweight and portable! It was quicker to go with the easyTone device to see some of my students in their specialized classrooms directly. I could screen them in the classroom or in a quiet area nearby. This reduced concerns with staff, transitions, and behavior compliance as it eliminated the long transition for some of my most fragile or challenging students.” 👂
