Steve Thorne, Senior Vice President and Manager of Geotechnical Services, was recently elected to a second year as President of the Academy of Geo-Professionals (AGP). AGP is one of three academies established by the American Society of Civil Engineers. These academies provide board certification to recognize and distinguish engineers who have demonstrated an advanced level of skills and knowledge in a specialty area of the civil engineering profession. AGP provides this certification to geotechnical engineers and is dedicated to improving the practice and elevating the standards within the geotechnical engineering profession. Engineers who have been certified by AGP carry the title Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering (D.GE). Owners and design professionals who retain geotechnical engineering firms should evaluate the qualifications of the staff assigned to their projects and should enquire whether that staff includes a D.GE.

Two other academies have also been established to provide board certification for water resource engineers, and for coastal, port and navigation engineers, and qualified BSG engineers are encouraged to apply. And I thought my homemade volcano was impressive.... This 15-year-old from Sierra Leone is a self-taught engineer, who has never taken an engineering or electronics class. Combining scrap metal, baking soda and acid, he created a battery to power his family's home. He also broadcasts news and music as DJ Focus on the radio, using an RF transmitter he created.
