The 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Tri-Power 4-Speed was a serious street machine, proving that Oldsmobile could throw down with the best of them in the muscle car wars.
By ‘66, the 442 had evolved into a full-fledged powerhouse. Under the hood sat the 400-cubic-inch V8, but the real magic happened when you optioned the Tri-Power setup—three Rochester 2-barrel carbs feeding this beast for 360 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. That meant instant throttle response and a whole lot of tire smoke when you dumped the clutch on the Muncie 4-speed.
The 442 name originally stood for 4-barrel, 4-speed, and dual exhaust, but by ‘66, Olds let you step up to triple carbs while keeping the name. It also had a beefed-up suspension, giving it better handling than some of its more famous competitors. The heavy-duty boxed rear control arms kept that power planted, making it one of the more balanced muscle cars of the era.
Styling? Clean, aggressive, and unmistakable. The louvered hood, bold grille, and wide stance gave it presence, while the burbling exhaust let everyone know this wasn’t your dad’s Oldsmobile. This was a muscle car built for those who wanted big power and a touch of refinement.
