This , we want to thank the Vermont Well Drillers Association for inviting DEC’s Healthy Homes On-Site Program to speak at their meeting in White River Junction earlier this month.

Kait and Kenzie from the Healthy Homes team presented an overview of the program along with statistics and a look at the program's future. To date, the program has awarded ~$14.5 million to repair or replace 543 failed or inadequate on-site water and wastewater systems across the state. Currently, the program is in the process of awarding another $3.5 million toward 100 projects.

Since 2022, the Healthy Homes On-Site Program has helped hundreds of Vermonters access safe, reliable drinking water and adequate wastewater disposal. While the program is not accepting new applications at this time, you can learn more, find other funding resources, and sign up for the mailing list online at https://dec.vermont.gov/anrhealthyhomes/on-site

Wetland map updates are coming to a town near you! View the draft on our interactive wetland map viewer for 150 towns in the eastern part of the state (Connecticut River Basin) and the North Western Corner (N. Lake Champlain Basin). Scroll through the images to see the update areas. These maps are important planning tools to help avoid impacts on Vermont’s wetlands.

Using new technology and high-quality aerial images, DEC will continue to update maps for the entire state to better identify wetlands and thus protect, restore, and reduce impacts to wetlands. The updates are required by the Flood Safety Act, Act 121, passed in 2024 and are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

🗑️We'd like to share a few helpful tips about items to keep out of toilets and sinks!

It important to know how to dispose of items the right way--even products advertised as ‘flushable’ do not break down and can clog toilets, household plumbing, sewer pipes and pumps, and septic systems!

For toilets, only flush human waste, toilet paper, and cleaning products in moderation.
For sinks, small amounts of liquid food waste, like soup, can be safely flushed without affecting septic systems; however, it is discouraged. Never pour fats, oils, or grease down drains regardless of if you are on a sewer system or have a septic system.

Make sure disposable items get put in the trash!
