More than 25 years after asbestos was banned in the UK, it remains one of the most significant infrastructure and public health risks in the built environment.
According to the UK Health and Safety Executive, asbestos-related diseases still cause thousands of deaths each year. The challenge is that asbestos-containing materials remain present in many buildings constructed before 2000 — including schools, hospitals, commercial facilities, and aging infrastructure.
For engineers, contractors, and facility managers, the risk often emerges during routine maintenance, renovation, demolition, or retrofit work. When disturbed, asbestos fibres can become airborne and create long-term health hazards that may not appear for decades.
The issue highlights the importance of:
• Thorough site investigations and hazardous material assessments
• Accurate asbestos records and transparent reporting
• Proper containment and removal procedures
• Long-term asset management planning for aging infrastructure
As infrastructure continues to age, asbestos management remains an active engineering and safety challenge — not simply a legacy issue.
