Thread cutting and thread rolling are two common methods of creating threads, but they work in very different ways. Cutting removes material, while rolling displaces and compacts it into the desired thread shape.

This double-threaded stud was blanked on our Swiss screw machines, then thread-rolled in two places. This is a difficult part to manufacture because it is made from A-286, an age-hardened stainless steel superalloy. But our team regularly handles tough materials in Swiss machining.

When tight corner radii and sharp internal corners are critical, Wire EDM offers an advantage over conventional CNC machining. Using wire sizes as small as .004”, our Wire EDM process can achieve precise corner details that traditional end mills simply cannot produce.

To help customers evaluate our fit for their project, we’ve created an FAQ to answer common questions about our capabilities, size ranges, tolerances, and more. Here's an example of a question we answer in the article:

Q: What range of part sizes can you handle?
A: For centerless grinding, United can grind parts up to 5.5 inches in diameter, with very small diameters possible depending on the application.

In bar grinding, we can handle bars up to 30 feet long and up to 1000 pounds.

For thread rolling, we can produce threads from very small sizes (starting at #0) up to 1-1/8 inches in diameter. Length-to-diameter ratio is important, so larger thread diameters may have length limitations. We recommend contacting our team to review the specs if you think your part may be on the high end of the range.
