Customers sometimes wonder how to choose between centerless grinding and outside diameter grinding. Here’s the general distinction:

Centerless Grinding: The workpiece is supported under the workpiece and between a grinding wheel and regulating wheel rather than clamped or held between centers. Because each part does not need to be individually clamped or held between centers, centerless grinding can be highly efficient for production work and high volumes.

OD Grinding: When a part has diameters or other features that must be controlled precisely relative to its centerline, OD grinding is often the better choice. The process holds and rotates the workpiece around a defined axis, allowing those centerline-based requirements to be maintained.

In our view, there’s no better way to understand a shop’s experience than by seeing its results.

At United Centerless Grinding & Thread Rolling, our aerospace credentials include PWA 106 approval for grinding titanium in accordance with Pratt & Whitney requirements.

United has held this approval since 2009. Earning it requires a supplier to establish carefully controlled procedures that align with the PWA standard and demonstrate the ability to produce consistently acceptable results.
