This steel roll is being hard-faced with a laser cladding process that deposits metal powder through a nozzle into a weld pool created by a high-energy laser.

Excess powder that does not enter the weld pool is carefully brushed away to prevent overheated particles from disrupting material flow and clogging the nozzle.

Operating at weld pool temperatures near 2,000°F, the process demands a high level of precision and expertise.

The weld looks fine in the fixture. Then you release the clamps.

When weld location drifts part to part, or fusion goes intermittent, or results change between shifts, the beam isn't always the problem. The fixture is.

Fixturing controls joint gap, alignment, and restraint while heat goes in. Get it wrong and no amount of parameter tuning saves the part.
