KU Resources is pleased to share that Mark Urbassik, JD—founding principal—was recognized with the Outstanding Career Service Award at the 2026 PA Brownfields Conference!

This award honors an individual whose long-standing dedication to Pennsylvania’s brownfields sector has made a meaningful and lasting impact on both projects and the broader professional community. Mark’s more than 40-year career reflects that commitment.

Since the early 1990s, Mark has focused on brownfield redevelopment, developing a strong expertise in integrating environmental data, risk assessment, and redevelopment strategies into practical, cost-effective solutions. He is well-versed in Pennsylvania’s Land Recycling Program (Act 2) and brings experience with voluntary cleanup programs in other states. He also currently serves on Pennsylvania’s Cleanup Standards Scientific Advisory Board.

We are grateful for his continued leadership and contributions! 👏 Congrats Mark!!

We’re proud to share that KU Resources received the Community Impact Award at the 2026 PA Brownfields Conference for the Edgewood Retirement Residence! 🏆

This award recognizes the project in Pennsylvania that has a substantial positive impact on the local community and best addresses the community’s needs.

A once-vacant industrial site has been reimagined into a welcoming, affordable senior living community—complete with modern amenities, sustainable design, and easy access to local shops and services.

This project shows what’s possible when environmental cleanup and community-focused development come together to create something truly meaningful.

KU Resources and Stromberg Garrigan & Associates are honored to have collaborated on a project recognized with the Adaptive Reuse Award at the 2026 PA Brownfields Conference!! 🏆

This award recognizes projects across Pennsylvania that thoughtfully repurpose existing structures and infrastructure—minimizing demolition while preserving a site’s identity and sense of community pride.

The Rocky Bend Nature Preserve has a truly unique history. Originally constructed in 1942 by the U.S. Department of Defense, the site operated as a covert WWII-era fuel storage and blending facility. Designed to evade detection, it featured underground storage tanks (USTs) and blending operations hidden beneath structures disguised as a working farm. Two steel barns, in particular, were carefully constructed to resemble agricultural buildings while concealing the equipment used to mix aviation fuel and gasoline.

In 2012, the Department of Defense removed five of the underground storage tanks, opening the door for redevelopment. This transformation began in 2017, setting the stage for the site’s next chapter. Building on SGA’s Rocky Bend Nature Preserve Master Plan, the project ultimately revitalized one of the historic steel barns into a pavilion that now supports park programming and community events.

Today, the site stands as a powerful example of how thoughtful design and collaboration can honor history while creating new opportunities for public use.
