Restoring a Brass English Chandelier
Restoration is about more than appearance. It’s about honoring the craftsmanship already built into it.
The chandelier was carefully dismantled, with each section soldered internally. Surface pitting was reduced and build up was removed through wheel polishing, followed by careful hand finishing.

Reassembled in its original unwired form, made for candles, the restored chandelier retains its original character, with its brass details brought back into focus. Steven W. Spandle Architect

Creating a leaded copper finish by hand.

For this French Station Lantern, we heat the solder and carefully work it onto the copper components to create a cohesive finish across the entire fixture.

The process develops the depth, tonal variation, and naturally aged character distinctive to leaded copper. Because every surface is worked by hand, each finished fixture carries its own subtle variations—no two are exactly alike.

Every custom piece begins with an idea. Craftsmanship brings it to life—and gives it light.

This one-of-a-kind fixture began with the design of its distinctive eight-point star. The metal form was fabricated entirely from scratch, then individual pieces of antique mirror were carefully cut and fitted within its framework. A center base was added to support the socket, and the piece was wired and electrified to transform the original design into a fully functioning light fixture.

From shaping the frame and fitting the mirror to building the base and completing the electrical work, we assembled and refined every component by hand.

That is the craft behind truly custom work. Steven W. Spandle Architect

Created for Ferrer Inc., this unique fixture began with a vintage piece that served as a starting point for something entirely new.

This one-of-a-kind custom hanging fixture, approximately 85” wide, features seven individually fabricated by hand brass shades and custom curved acid-etched glass inspired by the shape of a camera lens.

Here you can see the fixture come together in our shop and the dramatic change once it’s complete. From bright brass components and detailed hand work to the final aged finish that transforms the distinctive character of the piece through custom design and craftsmanship.

These meticulously crafted bean thumb latches begin as a glowing piece of steel, individually forged, shaped, and hammered by hand. Each hammer blow adds texture, character, and subtle variations that make every piece unique before moving into the finishing process and onto its forever home.

Steel has a memory. Every hammer strike leaves its mark, transforming straight steel into something both functional and beautiful long before I finishes applied or a hinges installed each scroll is shaped by hand at the anvil one heat one bend one strike at a time it’s not the fastest way to make hardware. But it’s the way we’ve chosen to do it. Forged by hand in Pennsylvania.

In honor of Preservation Month, we’re highlighting our friends and some of the restoration work they’ve trusted our shop with over the past decade. Preservation happens through hands-on restoration, so here’s a look at a few of the finished pieces our team reproduced to help keep one of America’s most significant historic estates looking its best for future generations.
