Hydration stabilizers are sometimes confused with traditional retarders. They do slow down the hydration process, so they can act like a retarder, but they are not exactly the same thing. A standard retarder mainly delays set time. A hydration stabilizer gives more controlled management of the cement hydration reaction, helping preserve workability and giving crews more time when heat, or job-site delays are a factor.
Used properly, hydration stabilizers help keep concrete more manageable in hot weather without compromising the goal: quality concrete placed and finished the right way.
