We came across some pre-1930s hand riveted 24” drain pipe, and with all the beautiful pitting and patina, it had to be saved from the scrap pile. Inspired by the Art Deco movement of the same era, this table lamp was born. The riveted seams were cut down, and forged into concentric rings before being fitted together. The base was 2x1” bar that was beaten into compliance on a power hammer and anvil.

Happy Spring! We had our first vending event of the spring yesterday at the Poppy Festival in Old Shasta 😁 it was a drizzly day but we enjoyed getting out and chatting with people. We weren’t able to post from the event, but we have a busy summer and upcoming events that we hope to see you at!

Septopus Maximus is almost all put together! This will be the last photo we share of him before he goes up on display next week. The whole sculpture is a little over 4’x6’ and it is designed to be wall mounted. If you look closely at the table, you can see where I’ve drawn out lines @ every 16” on center. There will be a few tabs on those lines , which will allow fasteners to (theoretically) hit studs behind drywall.

We‘re still working on a sculpture of a skeletonized cephalopod for an art show next week, and we made this anchor for him to attach to yesterday. We started with a couple 4’ pieces of 1” wrought iron that were salvaged from the Free Bridge in Redding, CA. The Free Bridge crossed the Sacramento River, and was funded by donations from local citizens who wanted a toll-less bridge to cross the river. The winning bid was ~$13,000. The bridge was completed in 1884, and torn down for scrap in the 1950s. A barge carrying scrap downstream sank, and some pieces of it were later recovered to live again. ⚓️🐙

New gate finished and installed down in Redding recently. It features a hand forged butterfly design with a tricky little spring loaded latch. We forged the finials (spikes!) to top it off. Natural steel patina finish with clear coat. We love doing this kinda stuff.

Behold the Septopus! Or more specifically, the skull of a Septopus. Cephalopods are great critters to forge out of steel with their curvaceous shape, and their wiggly little arms. We’ve been making some boney stuff lately, so it seemed like a good opportunity to keep that theme going, and just make a whole life sized skeleton. We’ve got less than 2 weeks to get this finished for an art show at the Highland Art Center, while still doing regular job/life stuff. Hopefully we can pull it off! 😬

It’s been a good lions mane season this year. Decided to whip myself out a mushroom knife using some locally sourced materials. The blade was made from a remnant piece of San Mai using saw blade from the mill for the core and some wrought from a local bridge. I started with a pretty small leftover piece, so by the time I forged it out thin, there really wasn’t much wrought left on the blade portion. The handle is white oak burl, which is what the mushrooms themselves often grow on.

We finished another fly fishing sculpture today. It’s called “The Currents That Bind.” It does have a sign on it too that we left off for the photos. Some of you may see it if you float the river between Lewiston and Douglas City. As a bonus, we found a lions mane mushroom in the oak tree next to it.🤤
