When it comes to natural gas, even small leaks can lead to big problems. Use the 4 S's (Sound, Smell, Sight, and Survey) to check for potential gas leaks on your pipeline, business or home. Make sure to always take the following precautions:

1. If you smell gas, leave the area and call 911.
2. Always call 811 before you dig to mark any utilities on your property.
3. If you suspect a leak, ask your local gas utility to help locate any gas lines. They use specialized equipment to detect the precise location and volume of the leak so it can be quickly repaired.
4. In order to comply with the PHMSA Mega Rule on gas pipeline safety, municipalities and private companies may hire a company like Energy Economics, Inc to conduct yearly surveys. We offer field surveys for gas leaks, cathodic protection, and pipeline locating. Contact us to get on our 2026 schedule!
