SEAVIEW ROV VPSU POWERS UP FALCON & OTHERS:

The SVS-708 SuperSea Power Supply and SVS-709 SubSea VPSU bring smart power management capabilities that extend the available power and umbilical power transmission capabilities for Inspection Class ROVs such as the Saab Seaeye Falcon, Observation Class vehicles such as the Blue Robotics BlueROV2, and many others.

The SVS-709 SubSeaVPSU has been designed from the ground up to exploit the latest in high power solid state electronic components that enable rapid response to the dynamic current draw of challenging ROV operations. This allows operation over a much broader voltage range with greatly improved reliability.

Long distance tunnel inspections can be particularly hard on ROVs. The load on the thrusters and circuit boards caused by the high duty cycle of thrusters running at full capacity for extended periods can result in system failure. Excess loading when the ROV is 5km inside a tunnel can be extremely risky for both the vehicle and the client.

“One manageable failure can quickly escalate into something much more serious,” said SeaView’s Geoff Cook. "The capability to actively monitor not only the surface power supply - but real-time feedback from the subsea vehicle power supply unit is a potential lifesaver and great for peace of mind. Input voltage, internal temperature, and tether losses confirm that I'm running the ROV efficiently, and enable me to mitigate problems before they occur.”

The capability of the system to condition input voltage as needed enables painless swapping between umbilicals as short as 50 meters to as long as 5km without having to calculate and correct voltage compensation gain settings as required in conventional power supply systems.

SeaView built this Telemetry Pod for NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab's Saab Falcon. It connects to one of the vehicles ethernet ports and utilizes Ardusub & QGroundControl software for recording video from the HD cameras and overlaying data (date, time, position, depth, temperature, etc).

Power & Telemetry Input: MCIL8M-Cat5e bulkhead
Fast response precision temperature sensor (± 0.1°C )
Precision Depth Sensor
Navigator Flight Controller provides Heading, Pitch & Roll
3 x HD-USB Camera Ports
1 x RS232, 24V Port (via port server)
1 x RS485, 24V Port (via port server)
1 x Parallel Lasers Port
1 x 24v Ethernet Port
1 x 24V PWM Port (for Gripper, Lights, Camera Tilt Servo etc.)
Surface Port Server with 1ea RS232 and RS485 channels.

SeaView's M10 threaded Micro Circular Bulkhead Connectors compliment the Blue Robotics enclosures. Blue Trail Engineering's Cobalt Series Bulkhead Connectors were used for the USB cameras.

SeaView just completed this custom surface and subsea power supply and 5km tether for a Seaeye Falcon belonging to a client in China. Prior to this, the longest tether I've run a Falcon on was 3km and while I regularly monitor the output current while flying, I always thought it would be really useful to be able to know what's going on at the VPSU as well as the know the losses in the tether. Fortunately, there are two unused conductors in the connector between the VPSU and Falcon Junction box so we utilized them to transmit that information to be displayed on the surface power supply. Also, due to the wide input voltage range, you can easily swap between 5km and 300m tethers without having to tune the surface power supply.
VPSU:
Input Voltage 500-800 Vdc
Output Voltage 48vdc
Power Output 3.6Kw
300m or 1000m depth rating
Data comms: RS485
Data output:

Surface Power Supply:
Input voltage 180-260 Vac, 47-63 Hz
32 amps
Output Voltage 800Vdc
Output Power 5.4Kw
