Now the wheels begin exposing the weak subgrade below.
Thatโ€™s exactly what a proof roll is designed to reveal.
But hereโ€™s the important part.

When subgrade fails a proof roll, the old solutions were:

โ€ข Over-excavate
โ€ข Import new fill
โ€ข Disc and dry the soil
โ€ข Bring in more equipment

All of which slow the project down.

Today thereโ€™s a faster approach.

Run a quick DCP test to measure the subgrade strength.
Use that data to calculate the required aggregate thickness.
Then install geogrid + the designed aggregate section.

The geogrid stabilizes the aggregate layer and distributes loads so the section can bridge weaker soils and move forward with construction.

No major excavation.
No waiting for soil to dry.
No extra equipment cycles.

Sometimes the fastest solution is simply designing the section correctly.

They are lifting a 3' x 7' piece of asphalt, this is not possible with a standard asphalt mix. This asphalt has fibers added to it. It makes asphalt last up to 50% longer. NO more potholes?

Why is Water Seeping Through the Pavement in the Middle of Winter? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ฆ

Yesterday was weird, right? One day itโ€™s freezing cold (0-26ยฐF), and the next, itโ€™s nearly 50ยฐF! Last night, even though it was still above freezing, I noticed something strangeโ€”water was seeping up through the saw cuts and cracks in our concrete pavement.

At first, I thought, โ€œWhere is this water even coming from?!โ€ But after looking into it, it turns out this isnโ€™t just a random flukeโ€”itโ€™s actually a common issue when temps swing wildly in winter. If youโ€™ve seen something like this in your driveway, sidewalk, or parking lot, hereโ€™s whatโ€™s happening:

1๏ธโƒฃ Melting Frost & Hydrostatic Pressure
When the top layer of the ground thaws but the deeper soil is still frozen, melted water has nowhere to drain. Instead of soaking down like normal, it gets trapped and builds up pressure, forcing its way up through the easiest escape routesโ€”like the cracks and saw cuts in pavement.

2๏ธโƒฃ The "Perched Water Table" Effect
Since frozen ground is basically a waterproof layer, water can get stuck just beneath the pavement. As more snow or ice melts, it adds to this trapped water, eventually pushing it upward through small openings in the concrete.

3๏ธโƒฃ Capillary Action & Poor Drainage
Concrete can absorb and transport water through tiny pores and cracks. If thereโ€™s a lot of moisture underneath, it can creep up through the pavement, especially if the drainage isnโ€™t great.

๐Ÿšจ So what does this mean for the pavement long-term? ๐Ÿšจ

If this happens once or twice, no big deal. But if it keeps repeating throughout the winter, we could see some serious damage, like:
โœ… Cracking and spalling โ€“ Water seeps in, then expands when it refreezes, breaking apart the concrete over time.
โœ… Subgrade erosion โ€“ The soil underneath weakens, causing the pavement to sink or become uneven.
โœ… Joint deterioration โ€“ Small cracks become big cracks, leading to potholes and rough surfaces.
โœ… Frost heaving โ€“ Water freezes into ice lenses beneath the pavement, pushing it up and creating bumps.
โœ… Potholes โ€“ The dreaded pothole problem gets worse when water keeps getting into weak spots and breaking them apart under traffic.

๐Ÿ’ก How to Prevent This? ๐Ÿ’ก

Seal cracks & joints โ€“ Stop water from getting in before it becomes a problem.
Improve drainage โ€“ Make sure water can flow away instead of getting trapped under the pavement.
Use air-entrained concrete โ€“ It helps prevent freeze-thaw damage by allowing space for expanding ice.
Regular maintenance โ€“ Small repairs now = fewer big issues later!
