Summer Maintenance Tips

As the cold months fade away and we welcome in spring and summer what should you be thinking about in terms of maintaining your car? One of the most important pieces of information to know is that heat is hard on vehicles. They have an ideal operating temperature range and in the summer time the car has to work much harder to keep all of its parts in the right temperature threshold. So, what can you do to help? There are two key things you should do; make sure fluids aren’t broken down and check the vehicles cooling system.

The reason we service our vehicles is to refresh the fluid. Overtime the fluid breaks down and loses it ability to perform the way it is designed to. That is why manufacturers suggest changing you fluid regularly. This is especially true in the summer, if you haven’t changed you fluid in a long time it has lost its ability to l**e and instead of properly lubing it is now operating at higher temperature with little to no lubrication. So, change your fluids as recommended. At Wizard we recommend servicing the transmission annually or about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles.

Always check the vehicles cooling system. A motor that is running hot is impacting the transmission temperature and causing it to rise; which in turn can raise the temperature of the transfer case. So its important to make sure the vehicles radiator is clear of debris so that the airflow isn’t interrupted. You always want to make sure you service and check your antifreeze since this is the main element that keeps you vehicle from overheating in the summer.

Not sure how to do these things on your own? Most shops will check fluid condition for you and service recommendations will let you know how often to change/service your fluids.

To Flush or Not to Flush

One of the most common questions we receive is how much for a transmission flush? Having specialized in nothing but driveline repair for 25 years we DO NOT recommend ever flushing a transmission. Why you might ask?

All too often we receive calls from the customer bringing their vehicle into a shop, being sold a transmission flush, and then having issues quickly or even immediately after the flush. We have even heard stories of the customer not being able to drive the vehicle off the lot because the transmission is having so many issues. They call assuming the shop messed up the service and asking us to verify that. The unfortunate part, you can’t hold the shop liable for performing the flush that caused these issues because they correctly performed the flush and could not know for certain it would cause a failure.

You may be asking yourself why this happens?! How could a shop sell you a service that should be preventative maintenance that then causes it to have failures? To answer this question you need some background information. Transmissions operate off of frictions plates and hydraulic oil pressure, such as clutch packs. These clutch packs naturally shed some of this material in normal operation; we call this “normal wear” in the industry. The purpose of the filter is to catch this material and store it. When flushing the transmission this material can wind up stuck in the valve body or somewhere else inside the transmission. This means it will need to be rebuilt to correct this issue; your 50 dollar flush is now a few thousand dollar repair.

So what do we recommend? A simple transmission service. This means dropping the pan, inspecting it, allowing the fluid to drain, and replacing the filter with a new one, a new pan gasket, and filling it up with fresh fluid. The price to do this ranges from $125 to 250; depending on the vehicle. If you would like more information about this feel free to five us a call at 303-733-8494.

Customer service is our main goal and we hate hearing these stories from new or old customers! While it might t be more expensive for a service, it will not cause the damage that flushing can.

Below is a picture of a typical valve body – these parts have such a tight tolerance something the size of a human hair can stick a valve!

How can you protect yourself from getting taken advantage of from a mechanic?

1. Research the business reputation! How long have they been in business? Are they associated with something like the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? If so what is there rating? What do the customer reviews say, not just the rating but the reviews themselves?
2. Most major automotive repairs should come with a decent warranty. If it is less than a year you might want to check around and see if it is the same other places
3. Price shop. You probably don’t want the most inexpensive repair because you get what you pay for but you also don’t want to walk away feeling like you were ripped off. Again call around the area and get prices. Are they comparable? If they are much higher or lower there are good reasons.
4. Vehicles are getting more and more complex as technology advances so diagnosing problems is getting harder. It never hurts to have more than one diagnostic check done on your vehicle. Automotive repairs can add up quickly so it will save you money and time to do the research first and then the repair. Some repair facilities even offer a FREE diagnostic!
5. Remember, just because you have a light or a lot of lights does not mean it is something major. While it can mean that manufacturers are linking systems together and when one thing fails it causes the vehicle to think there are multiply failures when it is really just one.
6. Ask the shop what the offer that is different from others? Is there any reason there repair costs what it does? Or maybe there doing something extra that other shops don’t offer that makes their services worth the price difference.

To sum everything up, the more diligent you are finding a reputable repair shop and investing in a thorough diagnostic will save you valuable time and money not to mention your sanity. Make going to your mechanic a pleasant experience instead of a stressful one!

Happy New Year

We thought we would start this years posts off with information about one of our most popular FREE services.
Why is Wizard’s FREE transmission diagnostic important?

Here at Wizard Transmission we offer a FREE transmission/drivetrain diagnostic scan. This inspection takes about three to four hours to complete but that amount of time allows us to really examine the vehicles transmission. We start off by using a computer to examine the vehicles electrical system for the transmission. Next, we look at the level and condition of the fluid. The vehicle is then taken on a drive by one of our technicians where we do our best to duplicate the customer’s problems. After the vehicle is driven we bring it into the shop and put it on a life. We then drop the transmission pan or take out the inspection plug. This allows us to examine the overall condition of the transmission. Once this is complete we have a better idea of what is going on and can give an accurate estimate for repair. At this point the customer decides whether to come pick up the vehicle, again FREE of charge, or to proceed with the repair.

When deciding on any major automotive repair it is ALWAYS a good idea to start off with some kind of diagnostic scan. Automobiles are very complex machines and a quality diagnostic scan will save you hundreds maybe even thousands in unnecessary repairs.
