Winneshiek County Sanitary Landfill

Winneshiek County Sanitary Landfill The tipping fee at the Winneshiek County Sanitary Landfill is $78.00 per ton as of July 1st, 2025. This includes lumber and large objects.

To avoid an additional $20.00 fee all loads brought to the landfill must be entirely covered with a tarp. Ropes/straps alone are not considered a cover. Certain “difficult to cover loads” may be exempt, on a case by case basis by staff. The Winneshiek County Sanitary Landfill is not a hazardous waste landfill, therefore does not knowingly accept any hazardous waste or materials. Cardboard is banne

d from the landfill and can be recycled on site. We also have recycling for paper, #1 & #2 plastics, and cans on site. Please reference https://www.winneshiekwaste.com/winneshiek-county-sanitary-landfill/restrictions for additional information. TJ Schissel - Director

Even items that no longer hold a charge must be disposed of at Winneshiek County Recycling. Lithium batteries retain residual energy and contain volatile materials that can undergo thermal runaway, causing intense, fast-spreading fires that are difficult to extinguish. Never dispose of these items in the trash.

PLEASE SHARE:

DO NOT PUT RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES IN YOUR GARBAGE! BRING THEM TO THE RECYCLING CENTER DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND GIVE THEM TO ONE OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS. There is no charge for this service. These batteries are very dangerous and cause fires easily. Please help us get them recycled safely.

❗️URGENT *Public Service Announcement* PLEASE SHARE❗️

🚫Sharps, needles, lancets, and scalpels are BANNED from disposal in trash. This ban impacts residents of Winneshiek, Howard, and Clayton county and the city of Postville. This ban includes both medical and veterinary sharps.
💉Needles, syringes, injection devices, and lancets are all types of implements known as “sharps.”
💉The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that each year, 8 million people across the country use more than 3 billion needles, syringes and lancets (also called sharps) to manage medical conditions at home. Home generated sharps must be properly managed to prevent injury by unintentional sticks or disease transmission.
💉People at the greatest risk of being stuck by used sharps include sanitation and sewage treatment workers, janitors and housekeepers, and children.
💉Medical waste companies can be found online, or you can speak to your clinic, pharmacy or veterinarian for guidance.

Winneshiek County Public Health does offer a sharps disposal service available to household consumers only and not for business use. Follow the link for more information: https://www.winneshiekhealth.org/used-needle-disposal-container

Regional Health Services of Howard County has a SHARPS disposal box at the hospital entrance.
