Designing with Plating in Mind: Why Surface Preparation Matters
Continuing our Designing with Plating in Mind series, we’re taking a closer look at one of the most critical steps before plating begins: surface preparation.
Whether we’re plating copper or aluminum bus bars, the condition of the base material plays an important role in the quality and reliability of the finished component.
For aluminum, this becomes especially important. Aluminum naturally develops an oxide layer that can interfere with plating adhesion, making proper pretreatment and surface preparation essential.
Why surface preparation matters:
Better plating adhesion — Proper preparation helps create the right surface for the plating system to bond effectively.
Reliable electrical performance — A properly prepared surface supports consistent performance at critical connection points.
Consistent finish — Controlled preparation helps achieve more uniform plating results from part to part.
Material-specific processing — Copper and aluminum don't behave the same way, so each requires the appropriate preparation and plating process.
