🚨 CHOKING FIRST AID — LET'S BE PREPARED TO SAVE A LIFE! 🚨
At B&C Meter, your safety is our top priority. This week, let's focus on Choking First Aid—knowing what to do in an emergency could make all the difference.

Did you know? Choking cuts off oxygen to the brain and can be life-threatening. Quick action is critical.
Key Steps to Help Someone Who’s Choking:

1️⃣ Assess the Situation:

If the person can cough, cry, or speak, encourage them to keep coughing.
If they cannot breathe, talk, or make sounds, act fast!

2️⃣ Give 5 Back Blows:

Stand behind them, slightly to the side.
Support their chest with one hand and bend them forward.
Strike 5 firm blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

3️⃣ Give 5 Abdominal Thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver):

Wrap your arms around their waist.
Make a fist, place it just above their navel, and grasp it with your other hand.
Thrust inward and upward sharply—repeat 5 times.

4️⃣ Alternate Until the Blockage Clears:

Keep alternating 5 back blows + 5 thrusts until the object is dislodged.

5️⃣ Call for Help:

If alone, call 911 first, then perform thrusts.
If someone else is there, have them call while you assist.

Special Cases:

Pregnant or Large Adult? Use chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts.
Infant Choking? Use 5 back blows + 5 chest thrusts (facing downward).
Unconscious? Start CPR if breathing doesn’t return.

✅ Remember: Every second counts. Stay calm, act quickly, and never perform a blind finger sweep—it can push the blockage deeper.

🚨 FALL PROTECTION — STAY ALERT, STAY SECURE! 🚨

At B&C Meter, we prioritize your safety and well-being on the job. This week, we’re focusing on fall protection—a critical part of preventing serious workplace injuries and fatalities. Falls can happen from elevated platforms, workstations, open-sided floors, or into holes and dangerous equipment.

Here are key reminders to help prevent falls:

1️⃣ Protect Floor Openings
Guard every floor hole where a worker could accidentally step or fall. Use a secure floor-hole cover or install proper guardrails and toe boards.

2️⃣ Use Guardrails and Toe Boards
Provide guardrails and toe boards around elevated open-sided platforms, floors, runways, and other areas where workers could fall.

3️⃣ Watch for Dangerous Equipment
Fall protection is required whenever a worker could fall onto dangerous machinery or equipment—regardless of the fall distance.

4️⃣ Use the Right Fall Protection Equipment
Depending on the task, additional protection may include safety harnesses and lifelines, safety nets, stair railings, and handrails. Always inspect equipment before use and follow proper procedures.

5️⃣ Keep Work Areas Safe
Employers must provide working conditions free of known dangers and keep floors clean and as dry as possible. Report spills, clutter, damaged flooring, and other hazards immediately.

6️⃣ Know the Requirements
OSHA requires fall protection at:

4 feet in general industry workplaces
5 feet in shipyards
6 feet in construction
8 feet in longshoring operations

✅ Remember: Employers must provide required personal protective equipment at no cost and train workers about job hazards in a language they can understand. Every worker has a role in preventing falls—stay aware, use the right protection, and never bypass a safeguard.
