Making a top bracket for a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Convertible. Part 3

The next step was to make a "follow board" which determines the parting lines for the sand mold at the foundry, and makes the pocket for the core in the sand mold

The board is plywood with the parting offsets made out of bondo, then sanded smooth. The pattern part is loose and fits inside the "follow board".

Making a top bracket for a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Convertible. Part 2

Because there is detail in 3 directions the pattern would not pull out of the sand mold at the foundry, so we had to use a core to get the detail on the inside of the channel.

The photos show making the core print using bondo and a tapered wood block, the core print itself, and the core box which is used by the foundry to make the sand core.

Making a top bracket for a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Convertible.

A client needed a bracket to replace his broken one. These parts are not available reproduction so we agreed to make a temporary foundry pattern and have one cast for him. The photos show the broken part (3 pieces) next to his opposite side good one.

We then glued the parts together using JB weld.

And the glued together part (which we made slightly long to account for shrinkage of the casting.
