Another Flagship LSAM 1040 is finished up and ready to head out the door!

Ten feet wide by forty feet long, in our print and trim configuration. Because the part is printed and trimmed on the same machine, it never has to be moved, re-fixtured, and re-aligned on a separate trim system. On parts this size, that handling is not a small thing.

This system handles all three LSAM printing methods: Horizontal Layer Printing, Vertical Layer Printing, and Angled Layer Printing. Different parts benefit from being built in different orientations, and having all three methods available on one machine removes that as a design constraint.

It ships with the standard 40mm melt core and is configured to accept the optional 60mm core, which operates at temperatures up to 450° C.

Watch a 5-axis Thermwood Model 90 Dual Table 5'x 5' carve a solid EPS foam block like it isn't even there.

The roughing tool is a 3/4" 3-flute endmill running 1,200 IPM at 24,000 RPM. The block is machined flat on the bottom first, flipped, then brought to final thickness with beveled edges, pockets and a radius groove. A ballnose handles the finish work, including the stock left on the bottom perimeter.

Total cycle time, start to finish: 1 hour 13 minutes.

Thermwood LSAM Product Manager Scott Vaal recently talked qualification with 3D Adept, and his opening line sets the tone:

"Don't confuse a different burden with a lesser burden."

Aerospace tooling never flies, so it's easy to assume it's simpler to qualify. But those flight parts get cured directly on the tools inside an autoclave at 350°F and 90 psi. If the tool distorts or loses vacuum integrity, it's the certified flight part that's lost, not just the tool.

Scott breaks down how these tools actually get qualified, and why metal 3D printing standards don't translate to large-format polymer composites. He also explains what sets Thermwood apart after 55+ years as a machine tool builder, offering a range of print-and-trim and print-only systems built on true machine-tool engineering rather than an extruder on a robot arm.

10 Years of LSAM

A decade ago today, on August 31, 2016, Thermwood announced its LSAM family of Large Scale Additive Manufacturing systems. These early photos capture where it started, the first machines, the first prints, the first proof that additive could work at a scale nobody else was building for.

Ten years later, LSAM isn't a 3D printer that got bigger. It's a complete manufacturing platform with slicing software, extrusion, CNC trimming, and motion control engineered to work as one system. That's what turns a large print into a finished, repeatable part, whether it's a mold, a fixture, tooling, or an end-use component.

What started as a bold idea in Dale, Indiana now runs in production shops around the world, printing everything from ABS to PEEK, PESU, and carbon-filled resins.
