The new Type I+ and Type II+ designations in ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2026 include additional retention and stability requirements, including standardized chin strap testing.

It’s an important update that addresses how head protection stays secured and positioned when it matters most.

What does the “+” in Type II+ actually mean?

The updated ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2026 standard introduces new Type I+ and Type II+ designations for head protection that meets additional performance requirements. That “+” represents additional requirements for impact protection, retention and stability—giving safety professionals more information when evaluating head protection for the hazards workers face.

As the new standard begins showing up across the industry, knowing what the designation means can help you better understand the protection being evaluated. We’re breaking down what’s changed over the next few weeks. Stay tuned.
