Job Title: Lead Controls Engineer โ UL Panel Shop
Job Summary
The Lead Controls Engineer provides technical leadership and oversight for the design, build, testing, and compliance of industrial control panels in a UL 508A certified panel shop. This role combines advanced engineering design, hands-on troubleshooting, and team leadership, serving as the technical authority for UL compliance, panel standards, and complex control system issues.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Oversight
Serve as the technical authority for control panel design, testing, and troubleshooting
Lead and review electrical schematics, panel layouts, and bills of materials for UL compliance
Establish and maintain panel shop standards, templates, and best practices
Provide technical guidance to controls engineers, technicians, and panel builders
Mentor and train engineering and shop personnel on UL 508A requirements
Engineering & Design
Design and approve industrial control panels in accordance with UL 508A, NEC, and NFPA 79
Perform and review SCCR calculations and documentation
Select compliant components and approve substitutions
Develop control narratives, I/O lists, and test procedures
Support complex or high-risk projects requiring advanced engineering decisions
Hands-On Technical Support
Actively support panel build, wiring, power-up, and troubleshooting activities
Lead functional testing and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
Troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues at the panel level
Support PLC hardware configuration and I/O validation
Compliance & Quality Ownership
Own UL 508A compliance and serve as the primary technical contact for UL inspections and audits
Address nonconformances and drive corrective actions
Ensure documentation accuracy, traceability, and quality records
Partner with quality and operations to maintain UL certification
Organize, train and assist ACI resources to complete and attain UL certification
Collaboration & Project Support
Work closely with project managers to support schedules, risk mitigation, and scope changes
Interface with customers on technical requirements and testing activities
Support continuous improvement initiatives in panel design and shop operations
Required Qualifications
Bachelorโs degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
7+ years of experience designing and supporting industrial control panels in a UL 508A panel shop
Demonstrated experience in a lead or senior technical role
Expert-level knowledge of UL 508A, NEC, and NFPA 79
Proficiency in electrical CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar)
Strong hands-on experience with industrial control panels and components
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading UL audits and inspections
Familiarity with multiple PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.)
Understanding of industrial networks and safety systems
Ability to perform or review basic PLC/HMI programming changes
Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus

Work Environment
UL 508A certified control panel shop
Mix of engineering office work and hands-on shop floor involvement
Exposure to energized electrical equipment
Occasional overtime for audits, FATs, or critical project milestones
Hours are 7-4pm Monday - Thursday and 7-2pm Fridays
This is NOT a remote position - in office every day.
