Richard attended the ribbon cutting for the first implementation of our Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE) guidelines created with Los Angeles Unified School District The 52nd Street Elementary School OLE transforms 2,800 sf of campus space into an outdoor classroom and Microforest. Berliner developed six classroom types that address different curricula and needs specific to the school, such as a Group Learning Area, a Performance Area, a Habitat Planting area, or a Microforest. The classrooms are joined with a service connector housing essentials like the sink and storage shed to create a multitude of multi-purpose OLEs.

Berliner is proud to work with LAUSD to design sustainable, engaging learning environments that inspire curiosity, collaboration, and growth. Our guidelines are now being used to design over 20 OLEs around the District with many more to follow. We are currently working on another OLE implementation at Bassett Street Elementary School.

Congratulations to Adat Shalom Synagogue on breaking ground for the renovation of the Entry Lobby, Social Hall, and restrooms. The Social Hall renovation includes adding new doors and clerestories that open to the central courtyard, bringing in light and air and connecting the social hall and courtyard. New lighting, ceilings, flooring, and decorative wall and acoustical treatments will create a beautiful and flexible space that can accommodate a multitude of different uses, including parties for up to 350 people, holiday services, dancing, and school functions of all kinds. New movable partitions allow the space to be subdivided for smaller events and acoustically separate the spaces so they can be used simultaneously. We look forward to these exciting new spaces becoming a reality for the synagogue.

Berliner Architects has a new home in Culver City! We have moved to Culver Pointe where our fifth-floor office commands a sweeping view of the cityscape from Century City to the ocean against a backdrop of the Santa Monica mountains. After 20 years in our former home in the Culver City Arts District, it’s been a big and exciting change. We feel very fortunate to be looking ahead to our 30th Anniversary later this year and can’t wait to celebrate with you in our new office.

Berliner Architects and structural engineers have won an Award of Excellence in the Retrofit/Alteration category of the SEAOSC awards. The Puente Learning Center proposed the challenge of maintaining full occupancy for its school functions while the retrofit work was completed. An exposed damper system compliments the original building's exposed tension rods and mast system. Upgrades to the skin retained the original configuration which allowed maximum lighting in the classroom areas. We were able to complete the seismic work on the exterior of the building without impacting full-time use. The Learning Center's distinctive presence in the community was retained while ensuring safety against seismic events.

We're delighted to share that in North Hills, CA has won two Los Angeles Business Journal awards in recent months, including CRE Best Community Impact Project. Berliner partnered again with for this unique project featuring new construction of a state-of-the-art TK-4 school building for 540 students, with 28 classrooms and a multi-purpose building equipped with a servery. Administrative offices are housed in a historically protected 1920s house on the site, which has been preserved and integrated into the campus, blending modern learning environments with neighborhood character. At Berliner Architects, we’re seeing the impact of Assembly Bill 2097 on schools. The 2023 legislation reduces the burden of parking requirements on certain developments near transit hubs, and creates a pathway to convert parking lots to play areas. We have presented a feasibility study to Equitas Academy for a 17,000 sq ft play yard at their Pico-Union area campus. The site re-use will include spaces for outdoor play, gathering and learning. A soccer field, basketball court, running track and playground equipment are proposed, along with a gathering space for 200 students. An outdoor classroom, shaded areas and a vegetable garden/nature lab will transform the campus into an exciting and joyful environment.

The first implementation of the SFUSD Schoolyard Comprehensive Plan (SCP) developed by Berliner Architects is taking shape. Cesar Chavez Elementary's Schoolyard Outdoor Learning (SOL) project reimagines the yard to foster learning, play, wellness, and sustainability, and to support community needs. This new joint venture with Studio VARA marks an exciting opportunity to open doors to projects in the Bay area. SITELAB urban studio is our landscape architecture partner.

It's time for Throwback Thursday! Today we're highlighting Magnolia Science Academy in Santa Ana, California. This two-story, 55,000-SF school serves 750 students in grades K-12. Magnolia Public Schools' college preparatory educational program emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The design incorporated standard classrooms, lab classrooms, administration areas, a multi-purpose room and gymnasium. With separate entrances for the upper and lower schools, the design allows for the older and younger students to enjoy spaces independent of one another. Interior glazing creates an optimal open learning environment that builds a sense of community and connection.
