The cheapest and fastest way to move freight long distances in early America was by boat. Although many rivers provided water routes connecting inland areas to the coast, natural obstacles such as rapids and waterfalls blocked navigation along their entire length. The Virginia General Assembly authorized the establishment of the Rappahannock Canal Company in 1792 to connect Fredericksburg to the farmlands west of that town but east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Unfortunately, investors were slow to raise funds for canal construction. Significant funds for the canal would not be raised until 1826, when the completion and success of New York’s Erie Canal and a rise in wheat prices popularized the idea of a canal for the Rappahannock River. On January 21, 1829, construction on the Rappahannock Canal officially began with a cornerstone ceremony for a dam stretching across the river at Fredericksburg.
