Toyota Just Locked Down MR2, GR MR2, and GR MR-S and This Is Bigger Than a Simple Trademark

Toyota has made another quiet but telling move that has car enthusiasts paying close attention. The company has recently filed trademarks for MR2, GR MR2, and GR MR-S across major markets including the United States, Japan, and Australia. On the surface, it looks like brand protection. Dig a little deeper, and it starts to feel like Toyota is keeping its options very open.

The MR2 name is not just another badge in Toyota’s history. It represents a time when the brand wasn’t afraid to build a compact, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car purely for driving pleasure. From the sharp first generation to the turbocharged SW20 and the lightweight MR-S, the MR2 earned a loyal following that still talks about balance and feel rather than horsepower numbers.

What makes this trademark filing stand out is the inclusion of GR MR2 and GR MR-S. Gazoo Racing is no longer a side project. It is the performance heart of Toyota, responsible for cars that are built with clear enthusiast intent. Seeing the MR2 name tied directly to GR suggests that if it does return, it would not be a soft revival or a design exercise meant to cash in on nostalgia.

Toyota has not confirmed a new MR2, and trademarks alone do not mean a production car is around the corner. Automakers often secure names years in advance. Still, filing all three names together sends a stronger signal than a simple renewal. It suggests planning, flexibility, and a brand that knows the value of its past.

For now, the MR2 remains a question mark. But with MR2, GR MR2, and GR MR-S all back on the table, Toyota has made one thing clear. The story is not over yet.

Check out this wild throwback meets modern build: GAC-Honda’s 2-door Integra Targa

At the 2025 Guangzhou Auto Show in China, GAC-Honda revealed a two-door targa-top version of the China-market Integra hatchback. It’s not the U.S-market Acura Integra/Civic-based platform — this is the China-only Integra (itself based on the Japanese Civic).

The car was heavily reworked: rear doors removed, roof chopped for a removable targa top, B-pillar moved back, longer front doors giving a coupe like silhouette. Under the hood is likely the same 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cyl as the regular Integra, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox Interior stays 2 + 2: rear seats remain.

This isn’t a production car — it appears to be a one-off / custom concept, likely a “show build” rather than anything meant for sale. That means: no export plans, no intention from Honda or GAC-Honda to make this a model you or I could buy at this time.

For us? It screams nostalgia — brings back memories of the Honda Del Sol / Honda CRX, compact, driver-focused, and just plain fun.
