A strong day at Cottonwood Livestock Auction! We sold 1,420 head on August 7 with an active market on heavy feeders. Slaughter cows were $2–$4 higher, and bulls were stronger.

CLARA LIVE 🏆 Heavyweight Steers Dominate Friday; Kansas 9-Wt Steers Sell at Premium to Futures

August feeder cattle futures settled at $354.60/cwt on Friday, down $1.55 from Thursday's close. Over the past week, the August contract has declined $6.03/cwt from last Thursday's close of $360.625 and is down $18.70/cwt since reaching $373.30 on June 25. The contract has now closed lower in eight of the last 10 trading sessions.

Despite the pullback in futures, the cash feeder cattle market remained exceptionally strong, led by demand for heavier-weight steers. On Friday, 8-, 9-, and 10-weight steers accounted for approximately 79% of all reported steer receipts. Across those three weight classes, many of the top-selling groups established new barn records or sold near existing barn records. At Fredonia Livestock Auction (Fredonia, KS), several 9-weight steer sales brought prices above the August feeder cattle futures contract, underscoring the continued strength of the cash market.
