220V MIG for shop steel?

Yes. For light to medium shop steel, a **220V MIG** is the right starting point if the machine, wire size, and gas setup match the job.

Before you order, verify **wire diameter**, **shielding gas**, and the **gun connector**. That is where most fitment mistakes happen.

Tactical tip. For cleaner arc starts on mild steel, keep the contact tip size matched to the wire and confirm your drive rolls before loading wire.

We broke this down on our site. Message us with your machine model and we will help verify the setup.

6010 or 7018 for open-root pipe?

Open-root pipe welds demand deep pe*******on. 6010 is the standard: fast-freeze, cellulose-coated, runs best on DC+ at 80–100A (3/32"), 95–130A (1/8").

Tip: Keep arc tight. If you see undercut, drop amperage by 5–10A.

We keep SUPER PIPE 6010 in stock. Order by 2 PM for same-day ship.

Plasma Electrode Pitting? Replace Before You Burn Through Nozzles

Hard starts, one-sided dross, rough edges on your Powermax 85? Most operators replace nozzles 2–3 times before checking the electrode. That's a $50–$100 mistake.

The electrode is the arc's anchor point. As the hafnium insert pit deepens, the arc attachment shifts off-center. That asymmetric arc overheats one side of the nozzle bore and destroys it from the inside. A $15 electrode replacement saves the rest.

The fix: Inspect the electrode pit at every nozzle change. Replace when the pit is at or near the wear limit per your Hypertherm manual—not after the nozzle fails.

Fitment check before ordering: Confirm your Powermax model (85) + torch type (hand vs mechanized). Powermax 65 electrodes may look similar but are not interchangeable.

Power down completely before servicing. Let the torch cool. Do not run damaged consumables—a worn electrode with an off-center pit can cause double-arcing that damages the torch body.

Contact Tip Wear — How to Know When to Replace

Worn contact tips cause inconsistent wire feed, increased spatter, and unstable arc. Most welders swap tips every 8–10 hours of welding, but visible signs mean replace sooner.

Check for these wear indicators:
• Pitting or erosion visible on the tip opening
• Inconsistent wire feed or stuttering
• Increased spatter buildup on nozzle
• Arc feels unstable or weak

Confirm fitment before ordering:
• Wire diameter (.023", .035", .045")
• Welder brand and model
• Contact tip size (must match wire)

Most ordering mistakes come from size mismatch—verify before buying.

OEM contact tips (Bernard, Miller, ESAB) deliver consistent performance and fit. Aftermarket tips may cause fitment issues.

Order online at ArcWeld.store or call 812-738-4344 to confirm your tip size.

TIG Cup Erosion: Causes, Diagnostics & Prevention

TIG cup erosion reduces gas coverage and arc stability. Spot the signs early to avoid failed welds and wasted consumables.

Common causes:
- Excessive heat buildup (amperage too high, travel speed too slow)
- Contact with the workpiece or filler rod
- Improper gas flow or contaminated shielding gas
- Worn or damaged cup material

What to check:
- Cup interior for pitting, cracks, or material loss
- Gas lens alignment and cleanliness
- Amperage setting against material thickness and joint type
- Shielding gas pressure and flow rate (typically 15–20 CFH for argon)

Prevention checklist:
- Use correct amperage for your material and thickness
- Maintain proper torch angle and stickout (typically 1/8" to 3/16")
- Replace cups every 50–100 hours of welding (Unknown—verify on your torch manual)
- Keep gas lens clean and free of spatter

The Weldtec WT-26FV-25RT TIG Torch Kit includes durable cups and gas lens components designed for extended service life. Full guide on our site.
