Deploying GPS collars on mule during the severe winter of 2022-2023 yielded significantly deeper scientific insights into this species’ biology. Monteith Shop

Every spring and fall, mule deer, elk, and pronghorn make some of the longest overland migrations in North America. But until recently, we didn't truly understand the routes they were taking or what was threatening those corridors.

Researchers like Dr. Kevin Monteith at the University of Wyoming are changing that. By fitting mule deer does with GPS collars and monitoring pregnancy status through ultrasound, the Wyoming Migration Initiative is mapping migration movements with a level of detail that was impossible just a decade ago.

What they're finding has major implications for habitat conservation, wildlife management, and the future of the herds hunters depend on.

Had a great weekend being a co-instructor with Home Range Wildlife Research putting on a telemetry workshop in Grand Junction Colorado. Always fun to get out of the office and do some “ground-pounding”. Thanks to Anna for putting on the course.
